Transportation Freight Damage Claims

Unfortunately freight can be damaged.  As careful as our carriers are, accidents will happen.

Managing this process can be time consuming at best, mis-managing it can spell disaster for you and your customer.

We are specialists in this area.

Smith Carriers provides transportation freight brokers and intermodal marketing companies with third party freight damage claims services. We work with the shippers and motor carriers involved in the transportation process. Our services ensure that the overall administrative costs of third party freight transportation claims are minimized by resolving the transit damage claim on behalf of the three parties involved in the freight damage loss.

Smith Carriers professional freight claims representatives receive the loss and damage notification at the time of delivery or when concealed damage is found.  This starts an insurance loss case with us.  You can receive complete case management information as the claim progresses.

We interview all involved parties including the receiver of the damaged product, or motor carrier delivery driver to determine the facts surrounding the transit loss or damage.  This will help identify, classify, and document the extent of the loss.

Faxes are sent to the shipping point outlining obvious loading defects to ensure corrective action is taken before the next load is shipped.

Pertinent transit damage claim data is input into the claims database.

We receive the customers damage claim files, reviews the claim files for appropriate documentation and supporting evidence of loss and damage, data accuracy, and photographs of the product damage, working with the customer to provide the needed documents. The complete transit damage claim file is reviewed to determine the cause of transit damage or loss.

We manage the damage product disposition process, recover appropriate documentation, control product salvage processes to maximize recovery and mitigate the claim loss, issue transportation equipment maintenance requests, systematically send out appropriate transit freight claim acknowledgements, approves damage claims for payments, or processes factually supported freight claim declination letters.

The system automatically generates a series of monthly and quarterly reports outlining damage trends, most active claim products, most active shipping points, most active customers, as well as the number of dollars and claims paid by the carrier, classified by the deficiency causing the loss.

The system automatically then files a subrogation claim for the transit loss or damage against the motor carrier or railroad transporting the goods. The entire process of freight claim processing and settlement, including follow up letters and rebuttals to declinations, is handled by our claims management staff.
